Financial Wizards Invest in Critical Thinking

Nicole Mazo's team was in first place in The Stock Market Game for a while. Although they did not stay in first place, she had this to say, "I do not care if I win as long as someone from this school wins."

CFHS students in Ms. Alessandra Borges’ classes took part in The Stock Market Game™ program. The CFHS teams placed first, second, third, fourth and sixth. The first and second place teams have been invited to attend The Stock Market Game Program Awards Ceremony that will be held on May 23rd at Salve Regina in in Newport, RI. Those students will be treated to a limousine ride to the awards ceremony.

Students who participate in the Stock Market Game™ program learn more than investing. As they progress, they learn core academic concepts and skills that can help them succeed in the classroom — and in life. Starting with a virtual cash account, students strive to create the best-performing portfolio using a live trading simulation. They work together in teams, practicing leadership, organization, negotiation, and cooperation as they compete for the top spot. The setup is engaging, and the learning is a natural part of the experience. They are learning economic and financial concepts they’ll use for the rest of their lives.

CFHS senior Chayanne Escalera and Senator Jack Reed attended an event on May 6th that honored all of students who participated in the RI Arts Competition.

Relationship between Math and Art

Parent Volunteer and Artist, Hector Uribe, created and shared his art based on a mathematical design to show CFHS students the relationship between math and art.

Parent Volunteer and Artist, Hector Uribe, created an art piece based on a mathematical design made entirely with string. Math teachers and students gathered in the school’s library to discuss the design and how mathematics factored into it.

Mr. Uribe talked to the students about the strong relationship between mathematics, a science of patterns and structures and the arts, which also involves patterns and structures. He wanted them to understand how art and math relate to each other in many ways. We would like to thank Mr. Uribe for taking the time to share his artwork and insights with our school community.

For more information on the CFHS CrossFit program click here. By clicking here you will get more details on how to purchase tickets for this fundraiser.

“Restorative workouts create an incentive for students who would otherwise be consistently tardy, absent, or otherwise problematic do to lack of peer involvement,” said Leo Sime. “I call the morning sessions Restorative Workouts because they help boost student’s self-esteem, enhance physical fitness, and establish a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship.”

“Andres is a hard worker and a very helping person. Being able to go to CrossFit Providence was a great experience. There was more space there than in our high school gym. At school we only see each other but at CrossFit Providence we saw people from the community working out together. We saw how people go out of their way to exercise and stay healthy,” said Dyllon Sousa, a junior at Central Falls High School.

Mr. Laplante is the recipient of the Environmental Achievement Award for being instrumental in the success of Save The Bay’s Narragansett Bay Field Studies Program with the Central Falls High School. When federal funding for the program was suspended, he worked with Superintendent Frances Gallo to secure the necessary funding from the district in order to keep the program running.

Local Business Donates to Arts Program

We would like to thank John Mitchell of Dew Claw Studios,  which services potters from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, for donating and installing a much needed kiln. Kilns are  used for the firing of materials, such as clay and other raw materials, to form ceramics and pottery. The kiln that the school had for its art classes was no longer working. This donation has made it possible for the students to continue to learn this art form.
